Big, beautiful, and free-flowing, the Yellowstone River rolls along the north boundary of Yellowstone Park and through the many rapids of the upper Paradise Valley. This is a wonderful river for all ages. Take a full day on the river to soak in the beauty. Stop for a delicious deli style lunch on a secluded beach along the river before entering legendary Yankee Jim Canyon.
Set aside a full day for your visit to the Yellowstone area for an unforgettable 17-mile trip down this magnificent river. The Yellowstone offers exiting Class II-III rapids in a spectacular setting. Stop about halfway for a delicious deli-style lunch prepped and served by your guide.
The Yellowstone is the longest free-flowing (no dams) river left in the lower 48 states. Put on just below the confluence of the Yellowstone and Gardner Rivers where the Yellowstone flows out of the park. You are not allowed to float on any of the rivers inside Yellowstone Park. The first 4-1/2 miles are along the north boundary of Yellowstone. Guests are frequently treated to the sight of big horn sheep on the cliffs above the river and often see deer browsing in the willows along the bank. Osprey, great blue heron, common merganzers, Canada geese, kingfisher, mallards and American dippers are seen frequently. Guests occasionally see bald eagles. The natural vegetation on the river bank and the bank itself is a vibrant reminder of how special an undammed river is.
YRC usually rows full-day boats, although if a group wants to paddle, they may. They often find that the upstream breeze in the afternoon means that you will have to paddle a lot, though, so YRC recommends that families with kids go with an oar boat.
