Rich in gold rush nostalgia and blessed with breathtaking beauty, the Middle Fork of the American winds its way through a deep and remote canyon in the heart of the Mother Lode. Alternately wild and serene, the Middle Fork offers a combination of thrills, excitement and quiet wilderness.
"Good Morning” rapid welcomes you with a dose of bracing whitewater, and the lively pace builds for several miles. Then you reach “Tunnel Chute” where the river thunders through a narrow and jagged granite chute, turns abruptly, and passes through a 90-foot cavernous tunnel blasted out of the mountain by 19th century miners.
Emerging from the turbulence of the chute, the river changes character and lazes through the scenic and peaceful canyon before launching into the final stretch of exhilarating class III and IV rapids, including a mandatory portage around the spectacular class VI “Ruck-a-Chucky Falls”.
One-day trip: For those who wish to pack a lot of excitement into their one-day trip, Whitewater Connection offers the full 18 miles of adventure. The trip starts early and can be strenuous. Lunch is included and ice-cold refreshments will await you at the end of your journey.
Two-day trip: For those who wish to relax and enjoy the beautiful river canyon, two-day trips are ideal. The slow pace on the trip allows plenty of free time for exploring side canyons, playing volleyball on the beach, fishing, or reading a good book by the side of the river.
