The Middle Fork American is a beautiful wilderness run that is eligible for Federal Wild & Scenic status. It is suitable for the active, fit and adventurous first-timer and is also a great choice for those seeking a step-up from the more crowded South Fork American. From its headwaters in the Granite Chief Wilderness, it flows through steep, rugged and forested canyons within the Tahoe National Forest and into the Auburn State Recreation Area. This river is one of TWT guides favorite trips (best for two to three days!), as they appreciate escaping into this pristine roadless area. Close to civilization, yet it is possible to feel that you are the only people on the river.
The trip begins with an early rendezvous in Auburn after breakfast. If you are lucky enough to be spending more than one day in the river canyon, you will transfer your overnight gear into waterproof bags. For most trips, you will then follow TWT vehicles and clients’ cars will be left at the top of the take-out road (Drivers Flat). At the end of the trip, photographers will have slides available showing numerous shots of your raft as it maneuvers the rapids. Then continue through Foresthill to the put-in location just below Oxbow Reservoir and the guides will ensure that you are correctly equipped with life jackets, helmets and a safety talk. You will be told about what you may expect to happen on the river and also any necessary environmental protection procedures.
The infamous “Tunnel Chute” is one of the first big rapids encountered, but clients have the option of walking around this fierce looking cataract. There are numerous Class 3-4 rapids in the first six miles, such as Last Chance, Submarine Hole and Kanaka. For the next seven miles, the pace is more mellow, allowing time to appreciate the solitude and beauty of the lush, forested canyon. You may get a glimpse of some wildlife and spot trout swimming in the incredibly clean and clear Sierra mountain water (originating from the snow pack on the back side of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows). Stop for lunch and possible side-hikes and plenty of excitement lies ahead.
The Ruck-a-Chucky rapids start just below the entrance of Canyon Creek (a possible lunch spot). A 20’ drop through a sieve of huge boulders makes the middle of these three rapids a mandatory portage, but the Class 4 drops of Upper and Lower Ruck-a-Chucky are usually raftable. A two-mile gorge laced with Class 3-4 rapids such as Parallel Parking and Catapult follow.
The Auburn Dam project has been threatening this canyon for more than 20 years, otherwise it would have rightfully received its wild and scenic status. Though the growth of the foothill communities is un-avoidable, there is obviously a demand for these recreational areas to remain unspoiled for future generations. Tributary can provide further information and they encourage you to become members of Friends of the River or Protect American River Canyons so all may continue to enjoy its beauty.

Trip Itinerary
1-Day Trip: One-day trips finish after 17 miles, at the old Greenwood Bridge site. The bridge was demolished in the 1954 floods by a 50’ wall of water that surged down the canyon after the old Hell Hole Reservoir failed. Cold beverages are available at the take-out and Tributary’s vans will shuttle you up a rough dirt road to your awaiting vehicles. You should be on the road home by 5:30pm.
2 or 3-Day Trips: On the two and three-day trips, you get the chance to enjoy the beauty of this river canyon in a more leisurely way. Most outfitters’ camp in the same area where a private 4x4 road enters the canyon and the gear is driven in by truck. However, Tributary usually prefers to carry the overnight gear down the river giving you the choice of some incredible and truly wilderness camps. Apart from being the only group in the area, Tributary’s favorite spots also afford the luxury of smooth, sculptured plunge pools and cascading waterfalls. At camp, and on other occasions during these multi-day trips, you can swim, play, hike, fish (need a license!) or simply relax at the secluded riverside stops.
A unique offering from Tributary - they may be one of the only companies that offers three-day trips or the option of running the little traveled section of river downstream from the Greenwood Bridge take-out. Though only Class 2 rapids are found in the seven miles to Mammoth Bar, there is a wonderful hike up the American Canyon to some incredible waterfalls and cool and shady pools. You have to know the river to find the spot and this hidden treasure is particularly welcome in the hot summer months. This part of the river is usually shared with just a few kayaks and the resident wildlife. The last two miles from Mammoth Bar to the confluence of the North Fork American are only suitable for very adventurous and experienced paddlers who are capable of tackling the Class 5 Murderers Bar rapid.
Meals, though they cannot be officially claimed as gourmet, always consist of plentiful, fresh and wholesome ingredients. Lunch usually consists of a deli-style spread with a selection of breads, meats, cheeses, tomatoes, avocados, lettuce, sprouts, chips and salsa, fresh fruit, cookies and vegetables with dip. Other lunches offered may be pita bread with chicken or shrimp salad and always a favorite, river burritos.
Dinners will commence with appetizers of vegetables, dip, cheese and crackers. The main entrée may be marinated tri-tip steak and baked potatoes, Dutch-Oven lasagna or any alternatives that may be requested in advance of the trip. Plentiful side dishes of mixed salad, fresh vegetables and garlic bread are also served. Leave room for our Dutch oven baked or other delectable desserts. A moderate amount of wine and beer will be available and also coffee, tea, hot chocolate and soda.
Breakfast may be eggs and hash-brown potatoes or pancakes served with sausage or bacon. You can also feast on fresh fruit, pastries, muffins, orange juice, milk, tea, hot chocolate and coffee.
