Five-Night Oar Trip

In one of America’s most scenic wilderness areas lies the Main Fork of the Salmon River, also known as the “River of No Return”. As you float through the continent’s second deepest gorge, you’ll find the river lined with clean sandy beaches and hills covered with majestic pine trees. You’ll find plenty of whitewater on the Salmon River as you float 90 miles from the put-in at Corn Creek to the take-out at Carey Creek. During this stretch the river droops 969 feet, and average of 12 feet per mile. The river itself is rated a class III, but you’ll run a few class IV rapids like Elkhorn and Big Mallard, some of the most famous rapids in the West. On each trip, Tour West takes along inflatable kayaks. This allows the more adventurous rafters the opportunity to run each rapid individually, as well as to explore and experience the river on your own.

The Salmon River is rich in Native American history, as well as the history of early pioneers. On your trip you’ll see ancient pictographs and abandoned mining towns. As you sit around the campfire at night, reliving the adventures of the day, your guide will tell you the history of the Salmon River.

As you float down the river you will be amazed at the variety of wildlife found along the river. You may see moose, elk, mule deer, black bears, river otters, golden eagles, red-tail hawks, and osprey. August through early September is the best time to view wildlife.

The food on the Salmon is excellent. Tour West provides three hearty meals per day. They also provide snacks during the day and at night. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a part of every meal. They can accommodate people with specific dietary needs.

This trip is ideal for both first time rafters and experienced rafters. It’s also a great family vacation. It has something to offer everyone.
