What a great introduction to rafting and camping - two days rafting and playing on a mild section of the Colorado River and one night camping in a tent – just enough to get a taste of rafting. It’s a great confidence builder as children learn to paddle and learn about the river. There’s nature games and stories at night. Kid-friendly meals are served, there’s marshmallows for roasting and a zillion stars for nightgazing. Winding along the edge of Arches National Park, you’re surrounded by spectacular red canyon walls, mesas and towers. This is typical “Old West” canyon country. Many movies were filmed here, including the classics: “Wagonmaster”and John Wayne’s “Rio Grande” and “Commancheros ”. You’ll recognize this area in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”, “City Slickers II” and “Thelma and Louise”, to mention a few. Choose an oarboat or paddleboat, or grab one of the kids and learn to paddle an inflatable kayak. With such a variety of rafts to choose from, you can be as active as you want.
Sheri Griffith Expeditions has dedicated a lot of time and energy to developing their family programs. Families come in all sorts of ways: grandparents, ‘steps’, extended families, and single parents. There’s room for everyone.
They originated the Family-Only vacations 15 years ago. Some of those original ‘kids’ have now become outdoor professionals, including guides for SGE. Don’t be confused with ‘family friendly’. This means families are welcome on regularly scheduled trips. The following trips are entirely family oriented... trips geared to the family, at a family pace, with family activities, family food, family caring.
This is quality time for the whole family, something where everybody has fun on the same vacation, both as a family and with new friends.
Special features of these family vacations:
Guides specially selected for their "kid skills".
Structured activities for kids in camp = time alone for Mom and Dad.
Easy nature walks and hikes.
Easy rapids appropriate for child play.

Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Meet at the river complex in Moab at 8:45 in the morning, pack gear in the van and head for the Colorado River launch site. After a talk about river safety and such, grab your paddles and be off. Paddleboat rafting is a team activity that the whole family will enjoy. There are also several inflatable kayaks available and you’ll quickly learn to maneuver one yourself with a partner of any age. They are so easy to paddle and so much fun. Another favorite of the kids is sliding into the water with their lifejackets on and leisurely floating along with the rafts.
Spend the day rafting and playing in the water, trading inflatable kayaks among yourselves along the way. Midday the guides will set up a fresh buffet lunch along the riverbank. Drift downstream until late afternoon, then pull off to camp. The crew prepares a western dinner, followed by a marshmallow roast over the campfire. Fall asleep covered by a blanket of stars.
Day 2: Awaken to coffee brewing, hot chocolate simmering and breakfast on the grill. After a hearty breakfast you’ll head for the rafts. Take a turn in the kayaks or play with the water toys. Spend the day rafting, swimming and playing on the beach at lunch. Enjoy another great buffet lunch around noon. Pull off the river late afternoon where the van awaits for the return trip to Moab.
Spend the day rafting and playing in the water. Time is set aside for building sandcastles on the beach and playing along the riverbank. Pull off the river late afternoon and return to Moab around 5-5:30pm.
