This particular stretch of the Colorado River is wild and free flowing, resulting in a variety of water levels through the rafting season as the snows melt and run off from the Colorado Rockies. Each water level produces different whitewater challenges. The narrow canyon of billion-year-old black schist rock is a sharp contrast to the red rock cliffs preceding and following the whitewater section. Indian pictographs, and other relics of human and natural history are some of the hiking highlights. There’s one day of exciting rapids, with the other two days spent playing in and on the river. Three-day trips allow for more hiking and a better sense of a comfortable “wilderness” experience.

Trip Details

Day 1: Arrive in Moab
Your lodging is at the Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge, the site of the original White’s Ranch where John Wayne filmed many of his movies. Check into your riverside room and stroll around the ranch. The orientation by your river guides is followed by a great western dinner at the ranch’s riverside restaurant. Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge. (Dinner on your own.)

Day 2: Westwater Canyon River Trip
They'll pick you up at the ranch early in the morning, drive to the river, load your gear on the rafts and head downstream. Time is set aside for walks to places that are part of the western legends. Your guide prepares a fresh buffet lunch. Camp is on a remote beach, where the evening always begins with hors d'oeuvres. Hike, swim or sit by the river watching the sun slide down behind the cliff walls. B, L, D

Day 3: Westwater Canyon River Trip
After a hearty breakfast, continue your journey. The red sandstone cliffs change to shiny black granite walls as the Colorado River plunges into Black Granite Gorge. Here are the incredible rapids the guides have been talking about. Late afternoon you’ll pull into camp, with time to relax and compare runs through the rapids as your guides prepare dinner. B, L, D

Day 4: Westwater Canyon River Trip
Awaken to the river lapping the shore and the coffee ready. Repack the rafts and continue through the canyons. Enjoy your last lunch on the riverbank and a leisurely afternoon on the water. The van returns you to the Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge around 5:30-6:00pm. Freshen up at your leisure, as dinner is on your own tonight. B, L

Day 5: Horseback Riding OR Mountain Biking
Today you have a choice of activities. Horseback ride in Mill Creek Canyon, an area made famous by John Ford and John Wayne. Alternatively choose to mountain bike along one of the famous trails in Moab's Slickrock country. Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge. B, L, D

Day 6: Scenic Airflight OR Guided Hiking
Another day of activities in the Moab area. You have your choice of a scenic air flight above Canyonlands National Park Monument Valley, or a hike among the area's canyons and mesas with phenomenal vies and secret hideaways. Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge. B, L

Day 7: Depart
Your adventure ends today as you depart on your homeward journey. B
