Like a desert oasis, the last 60 miles of the Salmon River are a magical mixture of sun and water. It's the river of choice for anyone who wants hot sun, warm (70 degrees) swimming water, and the most beautiful white sand beaches of any river in the West. From ROW's put-in near Whitebird, Idaho you'll float through twisted volcanic canyons that open up to vast mountains soaring into an endless western sky. As the river is constricted by cliffs and boulders, raft-tossing rapids quench your thirst for excitement. Between the rapids you'll relax, drift and enjoy the mountain vistas and soaring eagles. You'll also stop to take short hikes to visit historic sites of the Nez Perce Indians, as well as 19th century Chinese miners. Camping conditions are ideal. From the soft white sand you can wade into clear swimming pool-like water. Or join in a game of volleyball, do a little fishing, throw a frisbee or simply catch some sun. After dinner, as the warm summer evening lingers on, listen to the river's soothing song and marvel at a star-filled sky. This is a favorite trip for families and the location of the annual Family-Focus trips.
