With scenery as awesome as any national park, the remote desert canyons of the Owyhee (pronounced o-why-hee) river are a secret hideaway that few people visit. Since it's undammed and flowing free, the Owyhee is raftable only during the spring when high-mountain snows are melting. It's a time when the desert bursts into life with a rainbow of wildflowers. You'll see dozens of nesting ducks and geese hiding in the grasses along the shore. Otter and beaver play in the riffles. Desert Bighorn sheep and antelope watch as you float beneath the towering canyon walls that are their home. Years ago Native Americans lived here, and you'll see boulders where their vivid rock carvings still remain intact. Then came the cowboys. You'll ramble through their aging stone cabins, complete with cookstoves and whiskey bottles. Row's camps are set on white sand beaches among twisted juniper trees and sagebrush. As they prepare the evening meal, you may decide to soak in a hot spring. Or walk up a canyon draw. After dinner and a Dutch-oven dessert, you'll sit around the glowing embers of the campfire. Around you pinnacles of rock silhouetted against a soft turquoise sky glow crimson in the fading evening sun. The magic of the Owyhee begins to take hold. ROW offers trips on three different sections of the Owyhee. The "Upper" is the most remote and offers the best wildlife viewing. The "Middle" has the most difficult rapids, and the "Lower" has the most hot springs. You may combine them all for a 17-day expedition.
