Grab a paddle and climb aboard ROW’s 34’ voyageur canoes that replicate those of the early fur traders. Following the trail of Lewis and Clark, let history come alive. For if rivers could talk, Montana’s Upper Missouri would tell a story few others could match. The drama of every major theme of people’s history on the Western Plains was played upon its waters and banks. From the Indian cultures to white man’s exploration, the fur trade, gold fever, and the Indian wars, their big canoes make the perfect platform for spinning yarns and pointing out the many points of interest along the way.
From the launch at Coal Banks Landing, the river carries you from a wide, meandering valley into the famous White Cliffs area – a deep, rugged gorge, which the Missouri has cut through the sedimentary floor of an ancient inland sea. Steep, eroded cliffs reach a depth of nearly a thousand feet and reveal ten million years of geologic history. Wind and water have eroded the sediments, creating massive rock crags and magical castles of dazzling white sandstone that loom above the river.
You will stop often to hike and explore. Visit Indian tipi rings of the Blackfeet and learn about their culture. Ramble around long-abandoned homesteads where the empty corrals, tool sheds and cabins seem as if the pioneering souls left only yesterday.
Summer days on the Missouri are typically hot and dry and the cool river water welcomes swimmers. Set up luxury camps on the river’s bank while golden eagles, hawks and falcons soar above you. Cottonwood, juniper and pine grow along with sagebrush, cactus, and wildflowers, providing food and shelter for beavers, antelope, deer, elk and bighorn sheep.
The smooth and pleasant current makes this a trip anyone in reasonable physical condition can enjoy and is also a great family adventure for paddlers age five and up. Each 34’ canoe carries up to 14 paddlers and two talented ROW guides. 17’ canoes are also available for experienced paddlers.
Five-day trips focus on the White Cliffs area with a touch of the badlands of the Missouri River breaks. For those especially keen on learning, several trips that are designated as "Journey’s of Discovery" are offered and led by talented authors, historians and interpreters with specialized knowledge of this area.
ROW invites you to float the Upper Missouri with them. A place where every paddle stroke and footstep resonates with history and wonder.
