Before Montana's Clark Fork River reaches Idaho's Lake Pend Oreille, it flows through a deep rose-colored canyon called the Alberton Gorge. Canyon walls and submerged boulders constrict this big volume river creating punchy rapids with tall waves and deep holes. Well isolated from any roads, you’re likely to see ospreys, mergansers and maybe some Harlequin ducks or deer. After lunch, there's time to drift and jump in for a swim. Warm weather and water, coupled with the quiet pools between the rapids make this trip appropriate for kids as young as eight. For summer fun close to Spokane, Coeur d' Alene and Missoula, the Clark Ford can't be beat.
