After an orientation to the Basics of Rafting (necessary in order to bring everyone up to speed), the entire team is thrown into a new, unknown, and complex scenario. The situation requires the team to rescue several of the Pocono Whitewater Guides who are actually being swept downriver. Most of the team members lack the essential skills that are necessary to carry out such a river rescue. In light of this, team members are shown several rescue techniques, including Paired Rope Throws, the Four-Point Rescue, and the High-Line Tyrolean (one of the most complex).
Every effort is made by the training consultants to provide all the materials and information necessary for team members to accomplish their goals. Multiple, in-depth technical briefings are offered. Time is limited because the members need to apply their newly learned skills before the victim passes by the rescue location. Even though leaders are appointed, and responsibilities are delegated, solutions can only come about through careful execution of the strategic plan.
As with every challenge in real life, a brief window of opportunity exists for success. If a working strategy can be developed and implemented, the chances of success are increased dramatically. If success is not achieved, learning must continue…
