You will understand why Buckskin Bill constructed a gun turret to protect his home along the Salmon River. This is the crown jewel of the Idaho Rivers, and a favorite of many returning guests. The Main Salmon is the perfect combination: great whitewater, an abundance of wildlife, fantastic fishing and hiking, picturesque camp settings and river lore that cannot be matched. This is the West’s untarnished treasure, and it is a fantastic inflatable kayaking run. This is a great trip for experienced paddlers, as well as the adventuresome novice.
The Main Salmon is the Orange Torpedo Tours’ Expedition trip. The cost of the trip includes a small airplane flight from Boise to Salmon and transportation from Salmon to the put in at Corn Creek. At this point you are deep in the Idaho Wilderness and here you will meet your guides. That night is one last bit of luxury. You will stay at the Salmon River Lodge to prepare for you journey downriver.
For the next five days and four nights you will travel into the heart of the Frank-Church Wilderness. The Salmon River flows through the largest wilderness area in the lower 48. Here it is common to see bear, deer, elk, moose, marmots, and big horn sheep to name a few. Besides the animals you see, you will be awe-struck by the pristine, rugged wilderness as you float down the "River of no Return."
Camping on the Salmon is an incredible experience. Big beaches, good weather, great hiking, beautiful scenery, and amazing camp food are what you should expect on your Main Salmon trip. If you’re thinking camping under the stars is only good for a couple days, then great! After three nights of camping your last night is at Shepp Ranch. This beautiful wilderness lodge has the amenities you’ll be looking for: a bed, hot shower, hot tub, and some of the best home cooking you will ever eat - a great way to spend your last night on the Salmon River.
