Rogue River Wilderness Trip

Are you looking for the chance to relax with your family on a unique vacation that everyone can enjoy? Are you searching for something that can be challenging and thrilling for one person and relaxing and peaceful for another. On the Rogue River with Orange Torpedo Trips this is what you will find.

As the world's inflatable kayaking experts, Orange Torpedo can have anyone paddling rapids in their own boat on their first day. If some members of your family are looking for something a little calmer, they can opt to ride on the raft with a guide. Kids as young as 4 on can have a great time on the raft with a trained kid friendly guide while parents have the adventure of paddling their own boat. Teenagers love the freedom and challenge of their own inflatable kayak. The best part is everyone stays together and has a group vacation as you float down the river having an individual adventure.

On your three-day trip, you stay at two beautifully rustic wilderness lodges known for their serene wilderness setting and delicious family-style meals. Spend your evenings enjoying short hikes with your kids and spouse, or choose to relax around the lodge playing cards and reading after your hot shower. The canyon is great place to catch up on the stories of your kids' lives or share a sunset and a glass of wine with your spouse.

For the last 38 years this has been Orange Torpedo's home, and they love it today as much as ever. With over 80 exciting beginner friendly rapids, warm water, and two beautiful lodges, this trip has everything you need on a family vacation. Sign up today before trips fill up; join Orange Torpedo's family of friends and guides who have been with them for almost four decades. Orange Torpedo Trips is excited to see you!

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Meet and Run Your First Rapids
Arrive at 8:00am at the AURA River Center (210 Merlin Road, Merlin, OR) to meet your head guide and receive your trip orientation. (Arrive early to purchase any last-minute items.) Your head guide will teach you about safety, river history, and paddling techniques. You will be supplied with all the equipment you need, including a life jacket, helmet (optional for anyone over 12), wetsuit, splash-top, a dry bag for your personal items, and a community dry bag to store items you wish to access during the day — like a camera.

When everyone is geared up and river ready, vans will be loaded and driven the 20 minutes to the put-in, where you will meet the rest of your guides and head down the river. After a couple of fun warm-up rapids, you will enter the Wild and Scenic Section of the Rogue River. This is where the adventure really begins. You’ll navigate rapids such as Grave Creek Falls, Tyee, and Wild Cat. In the afternoon, the group will beach. From there it’s a short hike up to the first night’s lodge, Black Bar Lodge, where you can expect beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, and delicious food.

Day 2: A Day Filled with Surfing and Laughing
Day 2 is filled with plenty of rapids, history, and surfing! You will navigate Horseshoe Bend before arriving at the famous Mary’s Pothole. The group will stop here and you can rerun the rapids until you’re tired out. This is the perfect opportunity to shoot photos and video of your family and friends trying to run this exciting hole. After some more floating, you’ll eat lunch and run a couple rapids before a quick stop at Zane Grey’s cabin. Next stop is Slagles’s Hole, where you can try your hand at surfing. This friendly wave is an ideal spot to learn how to ride the waves and perfect some great surfing moves like the paddle spin! When you are all surfed out, end the day at Marial Lodge. With its great food, hiking, scenery, and atmosphere, you may never want to leave.

Day 3: Time to Go Home
The last day on the water includes some of the most exciting whitewater. Start right off with Mule Creek Canyon — a whitewater gorge that is truly unique. After Coffee Pot, you will come up to the world famous Blossom Bar. A challenging rapid for the rafts, you will find your Torpedo floats right through with little difficulty. After some more rapids and a riverside lunch, you will land the takeout in the early afternoon. Change out of your river clothes while the guides de-rig the rafts. After loading the vans it’s a 2½-hour drive back to the AURA River Center.
