The Rogue wanders merrily through the thick forests and intimate canyons of southern Oregon. A river of secrets, it displays bright meadows, sparkling waterfalls, and verdant fern grottoes that are otherwise hidden to human eyes. Because of its magnificent beauty and delightful character, it was one of the first rivers to be named “Wild and Scenic” in 1968, when the U.S. government began offering protection to the most outstanding waterways.
If you’re seeking a true wilderness experience without extreme whitewater, this is the trip for you. Warm air and water temperatures make for great inflatable kayaking and swimming in the Rogue’s calm pools. Fun hikes to historical destinations (and maybe to a temperate rainforest), superb fishing, and ample wildlife — including bears, beavers, otters and eagles — provide a rich experience for all ages.
O.A.R.S.’ Rogue trip also fits in neatly with a Pacific Northwest vacation. It is close to Oregon’s state-protected coastline, where you can explore miles of undeveloped, pure ocean beaches. It is also near Crater Lake National Park and California’s Redwood National Park. Plus, the nationally acclaimed Ashland Summer Shakespeare Festival is just a short drive away.
