The San Juan winds and snakes among marvelous red rock mosaics in the most convoluted canyon of the Colorado River Plateau The “Goosenecks of the San Juan” is a particularly famous stretch — the river twists so intensely here that it actually journeys seven river miles through a section measuring just two miles as the crow flies!
The easily accessible Pre-Puebloan cave ruins and rock art make the upper San Juan especially outstanding. Some of the vivid petroglyph panels in this canyon are even visible from the river side hikes are numerous and can include a visit to a polished, sandstone-walled swimming pool. The San Juan’s warm, gentle water, predictably sunny weather, scenic waterfalls, and beach camping make this a fantastic vacation for families with children as young as five.
