One of the most scenic rivers in California, the Lower Klamath offers phenomenal opportunities for viewing and photographing wildlife such as black bear, otter, and great blue heron. The small rapids are bouncy with plenty of calm stretches; yet there’s enough whitewater to keep you entertained. Moreover, the warm water makes for superb swimming and inflatable kayaking.
The Lower Klamath is a great vacation for families and youth groups. Exploring side creeks, swimming in the warm river, watching for deer and turtles along the riverbank, and picking blackberries (when in season) make it a special children’s adventure. This trip runs through Klamath National Forest – Bigfoot Country! – and it’s easily combined with a visit to nearby Redwood National Park or Ashland, home of Oregon’s outstanding Summer Shakespeare Festival.

Trip Itinerary
Day 1: The meeting place is the Klamath River Resort Inn in Happy Camp. An O.A.R.S. guide will hand out two waterproof bags (per person) to repack your gear. Once packed, transfer to the put-in for a river safety orientation. Then board the rafts and inflatable kayaks and challenge the rapids. You will pull over along the river for a delicious lunch, after which you will continue down river to the campsite. Note: Guides are “tuned in” to the river and will adjust the logistics of each trip to optimize your river rafting experience.
At the end of the afternoon the guides will set up the kitchen and begin preparing a sumptuous dinner. While in camp there will be time to set up your individual site, get to know each other, fish, swim, play, or perhaps sample the delectable hors d’oeuvres the guides have prepared. Dessert and perhaps a tall tale or two follows the evening meal.
Days 2-3: Rise amidst the wonderful smells of coffee and breakfast. There is time to repack your gear and get ready for another exciting day on the river. Today, continue down stream, stopping for lunch and perhaps to pick blackberries (in season). Take a short hike to scout the class II rapid before the rafts and inflatables challenge it.
Camp overnight one more night and continue down the wild and scenic Klamath the next morning for another exciting day of rafting and splashing in the warm waters. Once you reach take-out, unload the boats and transfer back to your cars at the Klamath River Resort Inn.
