1-Day Trip
Rafting on the Kennebec River is famous for its remote wilderness setting, big roller coaster waves and summer-long flows. This 12-mile run is the most popular trip.
Running daily, deep and fast, the Kennebec's Upper Gorge section has huge roller coaster waves with the legendary Big Mama, Whitewasher, Rock Garden, Three Sisters, the Alleyway and Class V Magic Falls rapids. You're guaranteed to get wet in waves cresting from 2 to 12 feet high!
The source of the Kennebec River is Moosehead Lake, Maine's largest inland body of water. The Kennebec carves its way through a deep gorge for the first four miles of advanced Class IV whitewater. Normal water releases on the Kennebec River are 5,000 cfs from early May to early October.
NEOC also carries along inflatable kayaks for you to paddle in the calmer class I and II whitewater on the lower part of the river. Pass by an osprey nest and frequently see bald eagles and ospreys, as well as an occasional moose.
Upon ending the 12-mile trip, ride back to the Osprey Center, where you may take a hot shower and get comfortable for a lakeside barbeque. They offer a hot tub, volleyball, horseshoes, canoes and sit-on-top kayaks to all rafting guests at no extra charge. After the barbeque, you get together in the Osprey Center for a slide and video presentation of the days adventure.
WANT A BIGGER RIDE? Choose one of their six-person high adventure rafts. This smaller raft gives you bigger hits and a wilder ride for only $15 extra per person. (Book these play boats early; there are only six in their fleet!)
SELF-GUIDED AFTERNOON INFLATABLE KAYAK FLOAT TRIPS These half-day trips are run daily and check-in is at 1:00 pm. All the equipment and transportation is provided. Sit back, soak up the sun and enjoy a seven-mile afternoon paddle at your own pace. Choose an inflatable kayak or a small rafts. The Kennebec River flows into Wyman Lake, so you'll end up at the Osprey Center Base Lodge. $30 per person. (Minimum age 10, two person minimum.)
