Matthew Polstein With my wife Wendy and young sons Max and Sam and daughter Annie, I live and work in Millinocket, Maine where, with a great staff, we own and run the New England Outdoor Center, The River Drivers Restaurant, and Twin Pine Camps. Through NEOC using nature, adventure, and cultural and heritage based tourism we seek to create rich experiences and educational opportunities, that promote responsible shared use of our natural resources, in a unique, vibrant resort setting.
Living in the Katahdin region, our future is directly tied to the accessibility and quality of the Northern Maine Forest and the viability of the many businesses large and small that seek to use it sustainably. I am currently a commission member on the Maine Tourism Commission; a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Natural Resource based Industries, as well as a member of Governor’s Nature-Based Tourism Initiative Task Force. I am also a member of the Governor’s Council on Quality of Place.
We are currently working on a resort and real estate development project on 1400 acres of spectacular land, adjacent to roughly 1,000,000 acres of conservation land including Baxter State Park, which we acquired in December of 2005. The project, for which we received a unanimous rezoning approval from Maine’s Land Use Regulation Commission, includes an 80-room lodge, 35 resort homes and a village centered live workspace with an agricultural center and up to 46 private homes.
The project is targeted to be a LEED certified project that provides a model for sensitive, appropriate development on the fringe of Maine’s 10 million acre working forest. We are exploring opportunities to partner with a green certified cogeneration facility and or to develop wind power at the site.
