Cataract Canyon (#2DCSB)
On this expedition, travel by RIB (rigid hull inflatable boat). This high performance craft allows you to easily travel the 100 miles through Cataract Canyon in two days. Designed by NAVTEC Expeditions specifically for whitewater river running, the RIB may be the most exciting boat on the water. This boat fits Cataract Canyon like a glove.
Cataract Canyon has some of the biggest whitewater in the United States during the spring run-off in May and June. If you want wild rapids, that's the time to go. After July the water level drops, producing smaller but still thrilling rapids.
On this two-day trip you'll experience all the mighty Colorado has to offer. The first day takes you through calm water deep within Canyonlands. There is time to swim, float quietly, and hike to ancient Anasazi archeological sites. In the spring a hike to the Indian Creek waterfall is a trip highlight.
Camp for the evening on a beautiful white sand beach and relax around the campfire after a delicious dutch oven dinner. Then it's on to challenging whitewater as you run Hell-to-Pay, Mile Long and the famous Big Drop rapids. The whitewater RIB provides a thrilling ride.
Leave the water at Lake Powell's Hite Marina. You then have three options: Return to Moab by ground transportation, return by scenic flight, or have your vehicle shuttled to Hite to meet you.
This particular trip is quit innovative because you travel by Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat or RIB. On the flat water stretches and Lake Powell you can cruise a little faster than conventional rafts. This allows the opportunity to see and do more in less time. In the rapids, the RIB is extremely maneuverable and most competent. If your short on time or just looking for a fast paced whitewater trip, this is it.
