Located in southeastern Utah, Westwater Canyon is a relatively short, narrow, extremely scenic cleft which the Colorado River has gouged and polished through an ancient uplift of black Precambrian schist. Soaring red sandstone cliffs cap the jet black schist, providing a striking contrast. A series of sharp, technical rapids are encountered during this 17-mile, one or two-day trip.
Launch at the Westwater Ranger Station, and take out 17 miles downstream at the Cisco boat ramp, both just off I-70, between Green River, Utah and Grand Junction, Colorado.
Moki Mac will meet you in and return you to Green River, Utah. If you’re driving, you may leave your car at their place. If you are flying out, book your flight into Salt Lake City, Utah, or Grand Junction, Colorado, and rent a car or take a van shuttle for the drive to Green River.
