Step up to the major challenge of the North Fork American River, a Class IV-IV+ technical extravaganza, perfect for the ultimate springtime adventure. The North Fork is the most challenging Fork of the American River. This relatively short stretch of river will thrill you as you meet its exciting challenges. Previous rafting experience and good physical condition highly recommended.
The North Fork's flow is created by the melting spring snow pack of the Desolation Wilderness Area of the Sierras. The narrow canyon walls glisten with water-worn granite walls, and sparkle with spring flowers. The river is beautiful! The first five miles are continuous Class IV-IV+ rapids. The final three miles of this ten-mile river offer a luxurious intermission to gaze with awe at the sheer beauty of 1,000-foot high, exquisitely sculptured granite cliffs.
A major feature of this river is its absolute beauty. In April and May the river is resplendent with huge splashes of spring flowers - California poppy and bright blue lupine!
