Green River/Lodore Canyon - Dinosaur National Monument
This is definitely the most beautiful stretch of the Green River!
You'll marvel at the high vermilion-colored cliffs contrasted by bright green Box Elder trees along the beaches. Lodgepole pine and Douglas fir are seen on the high ledges and canyon rim. Mountain sheep, deer and other wildlife abound. You can almost hear the whisperings of outlaws, trappers and explorers of bygone days.
There's plenty of excitement, too. Lodore Canyon has Class II and III rapids with names like Disaster Falls, Hell's Half Mile and Triplet Falls. The average descent is one foot per mile above Disaster Falls and the greatest rate of descent is at Hell's Half Mile, which is a drop 30 feet in less than a half-mile. The dam at Flaming Gorge Reservoir sustains the Green River. This maintains the river flow at a navigable level throughout the spring and summer months.
Green River expeditions depart from Hatch River Expedition's headquarters in Vernal, Utah. From here you will be transported to the "Gates of Lodore", the northernmost border of Dinosaur National Monument. Driving time is approximately two hours. Two, three, four, and five-day trips are available from mid-May to mid-September.
Itinerary Upon arrival at the river, you will meet your guides, board the rafts and begin your adventure. There will be time for hiking, exploring, fishing or just relaxing. In the evenings, you can sit around a campfire and listen to the stories of by-gone days. At bedtime, the soothing sound of the flowing river gently lulls you to sleep. Camping each night is along the riverbanks in spacious camps.
Approximately 20 miles from the launch point at the head of Lodore Canyon, the Yampa River joins the Green at Echo Park, the site of the imposing Steamboat Rock. You'll continue on the Green River through Whirlpool Canyon and, the last leg of the journey, Split Mountain Canyon with Moonshine, S.O.B., Schoolboy and Inglesby Rapids to end your trip on a high note. From this point, you will take a short bus ride back to headquarters. The total trip covers approximately 47 miles.
The Green River is a wonderful place to go just to "get away from it all" - the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Enjoy the scenery and solitude with just a splash of excitement thrown in. It's a great trip for the entire family. You can join an existing trip or get a group of friends, relatives or co-workers together for your own trip. Trips can be customized to fit your needs. Don’t forget to inquire about Hatch’s family trips and group rates.
