Before the arrival of whitewater rafting and kayaking, the small town of Futaleufu in the heart of Chilean Patagonia was nearly untouched by the outside world. With its namesake river now world renowned by aficionados of rafting and angling, the 1,000 year round residents of the town welcome adventure travelers from all over the globe. Futaleufu comes from the Mapuche language meaning Futa (Big) and Leufu (River). It is a land where time seems to have stood still, where you will feel you have been dropped into the mystic surrealism of a Garcia Marquez novel, where cows, horses and hay carts intermingle with 60s era Ford pickups. Futaleufu lies 45 minutes south of Puerto Montt, Chile by Charter flight and only six kilometers from the Argentine border.
