Overview
It was the famous river-runner, writer, Sunset magazine editor, and environmental crusader, Martin Litton, who founded Grand Canyon Dories. He built a company that believed in hiring well-educated guides who thoroughly loved the rivers and their history, and never shied away from the heat of adventure. They are proud to carry on the tradition of Litton's original company. O.A.R.S. and Grand Canyon Dories offer these beautiful, legendary boats on a wide variety of river trips throughout Utah, Idaho, early-season trips in Oregon, and of course the Grand Canyon. Why try a dory? The dory’s ancestor is the original Portuguese fishing dory--those pretty harbor boats that accent many European paintings. Even now, each dory is a handcrafted piece of art. But it’s not just a joy to behold; it's also a joy to ride. During tranquil stretches, the ride is so soothing the dory’s been called a "floating lounge chair." But in whitewater it becomes a thrilling and bold roller coaster rocketing off every crest, then firmly landing in an explosion of glistening spray. Seasoned river-runners will tell you that the dory is the only way to go. They are also the only company in the world to offer whitewater dory instruction.
0.A.R.S. and Grand Canyon Dories have a reputation for maintaining the gold standard for outfitters in the Grand Canyon. That’s because they are the most experienced oar-powered companies in the Canyon, having guided satisfied customers for nearly 30 years. Their full-time Grand Canyon guides are legends in their own time. Their enthusiasm, knowledge and years of experience are unmatched in the industry. They strive to maintain their reputation by remaining on the cutting-edge; always using the most advanced river running equipment and techniques. This is North America’s ultimate river trip, through one of the Seven Wonders of the World. What few people realize is that because the water releases are controlled, the early and late seasons of April or September and October, offer the Canyon at its best. Grand Canyon Dories specialize in fantastic side hikes to Matkatamiba Canyon, Deer Creek Falls, Elves Chasm, Havasu Creek and other lush oases in this desert of skyscraper rocks. They'll even take you to one of the best swimming holes in the West--the warm, turquoise water of the Little Colorado.
