The ideal way to truly experience the adventure of riding and rafting all in four days! You'll experience the natural beauty of the Flathead National Forest by horseback on this 1½-day pack trip then top it off with 2½ days of whitewater rafting on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River.
You begin by meeting at Glacier Raft Company’s West Glacier office at 8:30 Sunday morning. You'll have a chance to pack your gear before the two-minute drive to meet the wranglers at the Rawhide Trail Rides where you'll meet your trusty four-legged transportation.
The view from the camp is striking. You'll see 360 degrees of mountain beauty from this spot, overlooking Glacier National Park, the Flathead National Forest and the Bob Marshall Wilderness - be sure to bring your camera! Besides the views, elk, deer or moose just might show themselves as you relax around the camp. You'll also experience riding through forested areas of pine and cedar trees.
Morning comes early around the camp and you'll have a hearty breakfast before mounting your horses for the four-hour ride back to West Glacier.
After lunch you'll give up your saddles for paddles as you head out for the river. You'll have a chance to pack the gear you need on the river in waterproof bags and leave the rest in West Glacier. The drive from the trailhead to the river is approximately 30 minutes. Upon arrival you'll load your gear onto the rafts and head out on another adventure and have a chance to wash off a little trail dust. After a couple hours on the river, camp will be set up along the river's edge. You'll get to help with a little camp set up and then you might want to go fishing or just change clothes and relax as your guides prepare dinner. The next two days will be spent with more floating, riverside meals and rapids until about 4:00pm Wednesday when you float into West Glacier.
In a country where so many great rivers are dammed and their flow regulated by government rather than nature, there's a special magic about the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, part of the nation's Wild and Scenic River System, and all its natural free-flowing splendor. You'll be able to see exactly where Meryl Streep guided her family on the river in the exciting Universal film "The River Wild".
You'll see the magnificent scenery, experience Class II and III rapids, enjoy the taste of gourmet meals and then be able to tell tall tales around the campfire before crawling into your tent alongside the river.
Fishing on the Middle Fork is good. There is a good fishery of Westslope Cutthroat trout, whitefish and some rainbow and lake trout. If you would like to do some fishing as part of your river trip, bring your rod in an unbreakable case or rent one from Glacier Raft. There will be opportunities to fish around camp in the mornings and evening.
